2010 Melbourne Cup   by Drew McGregor

The 2010 Melbourne Cup will be very similar to previous years but with one small difference. The race will take place in the usual location, Flemington Race Track, in Victoria, NSW.

The race will be structured the same previous years and the race, identified as race 7 will take place at the same time as usual. However, the difference in this years event is that it will be the 150th time the race has been held. Hence, it will be a notable moment in Australian racing history.

The race will definitely live up to its name this year, known as the race that ’stops the nation’. Crowds have been consistently over 100,000 in recent years and there is a strong indication that this year will be no exception.

There is also the possibility of a new record being set, the previous record being around 130,000 in 2003.

However, attending the race itself is small in scope of the wider event. People will stop all over the nation to watch the race. Workplaces and schools (outside of Victoria that is) and families all over Australia will tune into the television coverage, with most people having some form of bet on the race, wether it being in the form of a sweep or a regular bet, wether it be informal or formal.

There is much anticipation to the race already. Various media outlets are already running stories speculating the likely horse to win the cup. Only time will answer this question though.

With the race favourites in the 2009 event coming no where in the top placings, the Melbourne Cup lived up to its unpredictable nature.

The individuals that were lucky enough (or skilled enough) to back the winning horse were not only rewarded with the thrill and stigma associated with picking the winning horse, but also financially with the horse paying out close to 1/10 odds.
